Sir Syed University – Offering Grad Students an International Platform
Sir Syed University of Technology and Engineering is a premier private academic institution located within the buzzing urban region of Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan. The privately run university is honoring in the name of noted 19th century Indian Muslim thinker and reformer, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan AlAzhari. Born in 17hra Pradesh, India, AlAzhari moved to Pakistan with his family when he was a young child. He earned a degree in Chemical Engineering from Quaid-ul-Azam University and subsequently spent time in Pakistan and Britain studying both English and Islamic sciences.
Professor AlAzhari is described as a brilliant educator, trusted scholar, and prolific writer who has taught across all disciplines within the past two decades. Among his many honors are the fellowships from the National Academy of Sciences, the Islamic Academy, the University of Cambridge, the Institute of Physics, the Royal Institute of Technology, the University of Glasgow, the University of London, the University of Oxford, the Imperial College London, the University of Bath and the National Academy of Medicine. As a professor emeritus, Professor AlAzhari served as an instructor at the Sir Muhammad Zakir Hussain Education Centre for Islamic Knowledge and Competence in Lahore, Pakistan from 1984 to 1990.
AlAzhari also served as an instructor at the University of Glasgow in Scotland from 1980 to 1981. Students in Glasgow will be especially thrilled to know that their teacher was one of their professors at the respected University of Pakistan, Sir Syed Muhammad Zakir Hussain. Although Sir Syed Hussain did not teach at Glasgow, his influence on Glasgow’s education was profound as Glasgow is the home of one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious Islamic universities, Glasgow University.
A famous alumna of Sir Syed University is Professor Tariq Fatima Husain. He is the recipient of a Ph.D. from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1990. Prior to that, he served as an instructor at the University of Glasgow. In addition to being a scholar and educator, Fatima Husain served as an Islamic coordinator and project coordinator at the International Islamic Education Training Program, formerly known as the International Islamic University in Malaysia.
Teaching and research work at the Sir Syed University has also been accomplished by individuals with other notable credentials. These include Dr. Mustafa Abo, who are presently serving as a professor of Islamic law at the University of Hyderabad, India; Dr. Ghulam Murtaza, who is currently a professor at the Islamic University in Pakistan; Dr. Zafar Ahmed, who are currently the dean of the university’s faculty of medicine; Dr. Abdul Karim Khan, who is currently the professor of political science at the Islamic University of Malaysia; and Mr. Azhar Hussain, who is currently the director of academic affairs and planning at the Islamic University. Azhar Hussain is also a practicing doctor of medicine.

Students may opt to participate in campus-based or distance learning programs. For those students who are already attending classes on campus, they have the option of completing their work through correspondence. Students interested in pursuing such a program must first complete their General Teaching Courses.
