Studying in Canada – Requirements

The tuition for studying in Canada is slightly higher than the average tuition fees in the United States. This is because many Canadian universities have adopted the tuition system that provides credits for international students studying in Canada. This policy has been implemented to attract more foreign students to study in Canada.
Students who wish to study in Canada must follow certain procedures when they apply for a study visa. To start with, they must submit an application for a study permit or a study visa. After the application process is successfully completed, the applicant can now proceed to the next step of applying for a passport.
Once a student visa application is approved, he/she will receive a visitor visa which will allow him/her to enter Canada. This visa usually remains in the applicant’s possession for six months. After the six-month period, the expired visa will be cancelled and a new one must be applied for. There are certain criteria required by the immigration authorities in order to obtain a visitor visa. These criteria are determined by the government of each province in Canada.
After receiving an application for a study visa and a study permit, the applicant can now proceed to study in Canada. The study permit serves as proof that the applicant possesses the skills and knowledge needed in his/her particular field of study in Canada. He/she may also use the study permit to search for jobs in Canada. By attending the universities in Canada, the applicants learn the various disciplines offered in their respective fields of study. Some of these disciplines include medicine, dentistry, nursing, engineering and so on.
However, it is not mandatory for international students to have a work permit when they choose to study in Canada. The work permit gives the worker permission to reside and work in Canada. The work permit is valid for a specific period of time after which it expires. If you decide to stay in Canada longer than the six-month work permit is valid, you will have to get a permanent resident card. This card is also referred to as the Canada Immigration Visa. If you become eligible for Canadian citizenship, you will have to obtain a passport and then apply for a permanent resident card.
